Bubble Tea should not be called tea (Discussion)

acrosstheuniverse saidFri, 06 Jun 2008 21:24:49 -0000 ( Link )

When first trying bubble tea I expected it to be somewhat like iced tea. But I have found that bubble tea is more like smoothies with their sweet, fruity taste and variations of tapioca and jellies. I think by calling bubble tea as such, it takes away from the natural taste and thoughtfulness of tea.

I agree, I think bubble tea should be called “Don’t drink this!”... personally I can’t stand Bubble Tea… but it seems I am a minority in this thinking.

No I agree with you lechuck. It just doesn’t taste right and I haven’t figured out what people enjoy in it. I even tried it more than once to see if it was just the flavor that didn’t sit right…. but, no it was the whole drink that didn’t seam to work for me. PLUS…. it always feels like those darn tapioca beads are trying to choke me as they fly up and through the straw.

Yeah, the tapioca beads are a little bit of a pain. I don’t mind the drink, but I hate trying to drink in the juice and all I get is tapioca! Whenever I order them I always ask for no tapioca a second too late!

As for the flavour, I’m not sure what it is, but it’s a little bit more.. tangy than a regular smoothie. Plus they have a lot of flavours that you would think would taste like a milkshake but don’t. For example, strawberry, it just tasted a lot more sugary and artificial that I was expecting.

The tapioca beads scare me. Tapioca scared me in general. I think someone must have told me it was fish eggs when i was young and the mental image stuck.

It should be called “Bubble Sludge”.

I wonder what would happen of you put those Tapioca things in actual tea, thats all heated up and stuff.

I think we might skip this recipe then…

Hot Bubble Tea Latte for one serving (16 oz.)

Measurements: 4 tbsp of Bubble Tea “Flavored Powder”

    1-1/2 cup of Hot Tea

    1/4 cup of Milk/ Fat-Free Milk

1 scoop of cooked Bubble Tea “Tapioca Pearls” in a drinking cup

Procedure: First add the powder and hot tea into the drinking cup.

Mix until all powders are well mixed and add milk. Pour Tapioca Pearls or Jelly Toppings into the drinking cup. Use a Fat Straw to enjoy the smooth texture of bubble tea.

You can add whipped cream as a topping . *If you like it sweet add 2 tbsp of “Sugar Syrup” or 2 tbsp of Condensed Milk.

Haha bubble sludge. I’m curious about this Bubble Tea “Flavored Powder”. What does bubble tea on its own taste like? Or does this not exist without the fruity sugary varieties?

I had ‘bubble tea’ for the first time two weeks ago…except I had “coffee falvoured” bubble tea, and had them hold the tapioca.

Haha. Not really bubblew tea at all!

    Really? I love bubbletea!

There are tons of interesting flavours to choose from. You can choose tapioca pearls, or jelly, or withdraw from having either. I think it is quite similar to tea- but with milk/cream added. I will admit it’s an acquired taste.

Although, I don’t think that it should be renamed to bubble sludge. There already is that sort of fruit slushie kind of thing which is much more like a smoothie! :)
